e-book

The success of the utilization of materials or resources in the teaching and learning in the classroom are dependant on certain aspects. The foundation or base for every successful learning experience is the characteristics of successful utilization of teaching and learning experience. This information is deemed important for every teacher and also the teacher trainees. In this class, we were introduced to one more type of teaching resources which is the e-book.

I have heard about this term before via television and magazine and I knew what it is stand for but I have never seen or use any of this type of materials. So this lecture gave me a broader understanding of what e book is all about. There were some examples of e-book shown by the lecturer to give us exposure about this thing. Besides that, we were given the guidelines on how to make an effective e book. The criterion such as the colour, the integration of pictures or images, the type and size of the font used and also the use of songs need to be considered carefully. As for example the font ‘Comic San ms’ should be used to the primary school children as it is quite similar and very close to the pupils’ real handwriting.

Before the lecture ended, we were told about our next assignment which is the assignment 2 and 3. This is very helpful to me as it serves as an early preparation on what should be done next. In short, I enjoyed this class very much and it had successfully opened up my mind that teaching and learning could be fun with the integration of technology.

video editing

This particular class concerned with video editing. Basically it was all about the editing of a video whether it is for educational to be used in the classroom or for entertainment purposes. For the introduction, we were served with the videos made by our seniors of the first cohort. The video were simple with a slide show of pictures and animated words together with background song but yet it is interesting and for me it was successful to convey the intended message in the sense that viewers are able to get the message delivered. After that, there was another video viewing session but this time round it is more towards educational purpose.

Next, we were assigned two tasks which required us to work in pairs for the first one and to be in group for the other. For the first part, we chose to make a video on happy moment and then later on uploaded it in the ‘Youtube’. For the second part, we were asked to go to the 8TV website on the net and to download the episodes of ‘So you think you can dance’. Using the downloaded video, we have make some editing job which is to cut and joint the chunks of videos together and make up a new one. Here, the teamwork spirits play an important role as it involves a lot of work and effort.

Hardworking, patience and determination are among the values that play a vital role in completing the task. During the process of working on the task, we faced several problems such as the computer hang so many times due to the RAM problem, problem of uploading the videos to the ‘Youtube’ and so on. Besides that, we have to really sacrifice our time during the holiday in order to complete the task. It takes us hours and hours sitting in front of the computer each day. But after all, we managed to complete the task successfully and that was where we felt that all our effort were paid off.

Here, again a token of appreciation and thanks to all my group members for their efforts and hardwork that they have shown now and then.

Audio editing

This week class concerned with another skills in editing, which is the audio editing. Firstly, the lecturer showed us two songs, one is the original song and the other is the edited version. It shows that even a simple editing can make difference whereby the lecturer only cut the unwanted part from the original song to make it sounds better. All this while, I always wonder how people mix one song with another song, how they change the tempo and sort of things related to audio editing, but now, I got the answer.

Then, the lecturer gave us notes on the theories and its importance in the creation of various materials related to the teaching of English language. We were divided into seven groups of eleven and each group will get different notes. For our group, we got the notes on significance way of treating mistakes. Luck was at our side as we have learnt about this previously in our college. So it is just a matter of recalling the facts. The theories of Erik Eriksson in particular helps us a lot in dealing with pupils mistakes in the most effective ways without hurting their feelings and emotion.

The presentation went on smoothly. Even though it is not as good as others presentation, but our effort and skills were paid off. A big thanks to my friends and lecturers.

a few words for the 3rd class

Here I’m writing again for my blog. This is for the third resources class that I’ve just attended. As for today, I felt surprised and shocked because of the assignment three that I’ve just received. It seems like one assignment will be allocated for one week and that means life would be much harder for me. In other words, it tells me not to delay doing the assignment given.

This assignment required us to work in groups of five. Surprisingly, we cannot stick to the previous group that we have formed for the previous assignment which means that everybody needs to be in new groups. But this time round, I like the way of how grouping was done through draw lots. In my opinion it is less time consuming, efficient, fair and easy. Besides that, it gives me opportunity to work with different people which I think is vital for developing sense of understanding about individual differences as people act and work in their own ways.

Other than that, we were asked to divide ourselves into six groups where we have to discussed and further on present our discussion on the topic of Working with young learners. Under this topic, I got to know that children have already equipped themselves with set of instincts, skills and characteristics to help them learn. There are six qualities altogether which are ability to grasp meaning, creative use of limited language resources, capacity for indirect learning, instinct for play and fun, role of imagination and lastly, interaction and talk. This information is very crucial for me as a future teacher in order to understand and to handle the kids at school in the future.

That’s all about this week. Hopefully a miracle will happen to me to help me with another assignment. God, show your mercy on me…..

second class POV....

Well, for this second week, we’ve just received our first assignment which requires us to look up for a suitable video based on a year 5 curriculum specification on the net to be used during the teaching and learning session in the classroom. I am glad to know that it is a group task which means that more than one brain will work at the same time to complete the task given. I find group work appeals to me because everyone in the group will distribute some ideas and when all the ideas are combined together, then a marvelous final product will be gained. It does not mean that I like to be a ‘passenger’. We had difficulty during the selection of the group member as the lecturer wants a multi cultural and multi gender group. It means that, all of us have to look for new group members. This somehow creates a chaotic situation but managed to be controlled

For me the task is quite difficult as I admit that I am not an IT literate person. With just a very basic knowledge about Computer such as Microsoft word, power point, and some more it would be difficult for me to complete the assignment alone. I really need guidance and support from friends and lecturer.

For our group, we have chosen the topic ‘glorious food’. For the time being, we have gathered and discussed on how we are going to carry out the task given. I would like to express a big thanks to Puan Foziah as she has shown us an example of how the video editing was done. It is about how to copy a web page and doing the editing on it. Again, I confess that this is my first time doing this kind of things. It seems complicated at first but I managed to do it with the help of my friends. It makes me realize of how sucks my IT skills was as it was so simple.

Finally, I hope that I will learn some more new skills throughout doing this assignment because I believe in learning through exploring…

my first class review

As a new student, this is a little bit reflection for the first class on this particular course which is known as Resources.

My first impression when I heard the word resources is something to do with the teaching aids. For now, the teaching aids that I am familiar with are word cards, picture cards, magazines, books, power point presentation and some more. In short, it does not really incorporate technology in the preparation of the materials. Somehow for this course, the need of IT skills is very demanding. I admit that I am some sort of lost during the first class as I do not understand and cannot imagine what the lecturer is talking about. Frankly speaking I’ve never downloaded movies before using the software program mentioned by the lecturer. So, can you imagine how blur am I at that moment….hehe.

I do not feel shy or hesitated to tell that my IT skills sucks as I believe that it is still not too late for me to learn. As the saying ‘learning is a lifetime processes’. Now, I really feel that I must learn very hard in order to meet the course requirement. I could sense that the tension is rising up.

But, besides the bad part, I am really proud of myself too as today I have successfully created my own blog. For me that is considered as a great success. To be frank, I have already heard about blogging from my sister who has created her own blog about novels that she loved most but I do not pay attention to it as I don’t feel the need of having my own blog. But now, I have no choice but to love it and try my best to make the best of it as it is one of the requirements of the course.

In conclusion, I hope that I will be able to get the maximum input from the lecturer whom I think is very expert in this field about how to download movies and videos as well as on how to make an interesting animation video and etc. That’s all for now. Pen off.
